This conservation unit is the biggest one among protected areas within Caatinga biome. This semi-arid biome is unique to Brazil, and it is consider a priority area for conservation and scientific research. The high taxes of biological diversity founded in this national park it’s due to several transitional zones between Caatinga and Cerrado, a scenario that favors the establishment of this richnessess.​

Two expeditions were conducted to gather botanic data and plant samples to Rio de Janeiro Botanic Garden and CNCFlora, in order to produce a floristic inventory to this porrly known region. Toguether, the informations gathered over there will help the mentioned institutions planning conservation measures to Caatinga plants.​
